The city of Kanchipuram is considered as one of the seven holy places in the country. It is otherwise called as Kanchi or the city of thousand temples. It is located about 75kms from the capital city of Chennai. The development of the city dates back to the 6th and the 8th century to the Cholas and the Pallava dynasties. During those days it was considered as a major center for learning and it is a must to visit pilgrimage center in the India. The well known business of the people in the city is the Silk saree business. The type of weaving in the saree is different when compared to the rest in the country. The main attraction in the city is the Kailasanathar Temple which was built by Raja Simha the father of Mahendravarman in the 81st century A.D. There are architectural carvings and sculptures in the temple that speak about the people of the age, the temple was built. Another famous temple is the Varadaraja Perumal Temple that was built by the Vijayanagar rulers and dedicated to the Lord Vishnu. There are other famous temples in the city built by different rulers in different ages. The Kanchi Mutt of the Adi Sankarar is a famous learning center now. There is a library associated with the Mutt that has a lot of manuscripts of languages and ancient books.
